PICK-YOUR-OWN |
SPECIAL HARVEST HOURS |
|
This was not the best summer for growing fruit. The spring drought affected the fruit set both in the apple orchard and the Fredonia vineyard. We are usually happy to have drought conditions in August which improves the quality of the grapes, but this year we need rain to size the apples and keep the grape vines vigorous. So we are hoping to have a few good rains (at night!) to provide for a bountiful harvest. The hot sunny days are pushing the ripening process and we will be starting pick-your-own grapes on the weekend before Labor Day with Fredonia grapes, followed by the white Niagara two weeks later. If you haven't tried the Steuben grapes, be sure to come out at the end of September for a real taste treat. (Home wine-makers: Steuben makes a delicious wine). Fortunately for the apples, we have strong wells and are irrigating the orchard. That, along with the bright, sunny days we are enjoying well sized apples. |
CHANGE OF SEASONS SALE Usually our Change of Seasons Sale is just on the Labor Day weekend, but we have decided to start on the Friday before Labor Day and extend it for 10 days. (If you are vacationing for the whole 10 days of the sale - while we are working! - consider yourself lucky and don't tease us by asking us to extend the sale.) The Spring Fling is in very limited supply and we may sell out before Labor Day. So you can take a chance and wait for the sale or come early before we sell out. We don't have heated samples of the spicewine and spiced apple until the cool fall days. We never can predict when we will run out of Summer Solstice, so stock up now for Christmas gifts. The 10% discount is on top of our regular discounts of 10% off the purchase of 6 bottles & 25% off the purchase of 12 or more bottles. Mark your calendar, Aug. 29 to Sept. 7 - 10% off 5 wines. |

GRAPE PIES Many people have never had the pleasure of savoring grape pie. It is difficult and time-consuming to make. And it is often hard to find Concord grapes in the market. (Unless you pick them at Susan's Vineyard) So I was delighted when an old friend, Al Cohodas, told me that he will be making grape pies this fall to sell. Al grew up in vineyards along the shores of Lake Erie in Ohio. He majored in Food Science and worked for many years in various food processing plants. In fact he was my consultant when I started the winery. I knew that his pies would be special and promptly ordered some to sell at the winery during harvest season. So if you want a real taste treat, try Al's grape pie. |
CAT TALES Moe, the winery cat, had a rather miserable summer. He was tormented by a pair of mockingbirds that had a nest nearby. The daddy perched on the electric wire that leads into the winery and as soon as Moe or his mother, a feral cat, ventured towards the porch where their food bowl was kept, the bird swooped down and pecked away at them. We had to call them out from the garage and escort them to the porch. The birds were quite bold and even buzzed me once. So Moe spent a good bit of the time inside the winery where he was safe from the birds and wild beasts. |
